Fake Plastic Fish... they're cute, and if we don't solve our plastic problem, they could be the only kind we have left.

The Archive Meme (Killing time while awaiting election returns)

Another day, another meme. This one is kinda cool because it's a way to go back through previous posts and revisit some favorites. Burbanmom tagged me for this one. If you haven't visited her site, you should. She proves that being "green" can be not only fun but also funny as hell. Anyway, here's my trip through the dark, cobwebby halls of my own archives. Enjoy.

First, the Archive Meme Instructions: Go back through your archives and post the links to your five favorite blog posts that you've written. ... but there is a catch:

Link 1 must be about family.
Link 2 must be about friends.
Link 3 must be about yourself, who you are... what you're all about.
Link 4 must be about something you love.
Link 5 can be anything you choose.

I think this is a great way to circulate some of the great older posts everyone has written, return to a few great places in our memories and also learn a little something about ourselves and each other that we may not know. Post your five links and then tag five other people. At least TWO of the people you tag must be *newer acquaintances so that you get to know each other better....and don't forget to read the archive posts and leave comments!

Link 1 - Family - Some things about Hawai‘i that have little to do with plastic. This post is fairly recent, but I think it's the best one about my family. According to my sister, it gave her a lump in her throat and made my dad cry, in a good way I hope. At any rate it's nicer than the one I wrote about all the plastic in their kitchen in Maryland! (Okay, I just cheated, didn't I?)

Link 2 - Friends - Like Burbanmom, I don't really post about my human friends much either. So I'll submit Kitty Love, by Soots & Arya, written by a couple of my new furry friends.

Link 3 - Me - The best post about who I am and why I write this blog is Tales of an on-again off-again activist, which I've also included in my blog FAQ.

Link 4 - Something I Love - I love the post, I think we all do that sometimes, by my husband, Michael. He's a "someone" rather than a "something," but I love that he wrote this post and that he's in my life and I get to hang out and play with him every day.

Link 5 - Free Choice - This one was easy for Burbanmom because she chose the moment that her blog started to sink into utter depravity. Fake Plastic Fish hasn't gone there yet. But just wait. Next week is Valentine's Day, and I'm toying with the idea of two posts: one naughty and one downright controversial. Do I have your attention now? Well, you'll have to come back and see if I follow through.

For now, I'm going all the way back to July and dredging up the post, Flushing Plastic Down The Drain, because discovering this plastic hiding place really freaked me out at the time, and it's worth sharing again with a wider audience.

And now I'm tagging:

It's A Green, Green, Green, Green World
Life Less Plastic
Low Impact Home
Avoiding Plastic - One Purchase At A Time
Long Live The Village Green

A couple of these blogs are very new and don't have many posts yet, so this will be a challenge for them to come up with creative interpretations of these questions. But this is one way for me to get their names out to you. Check them out!

The Pharyngula mutating genre meme

Uh oh. I got caught by another of these viral memes.

[see details below]

My great- great- great- grandparent is Pharyngula
My great- great- grandparent is Metamagician and the Hellfire Club.
My great- grandparent is Sentient Developments .
My grandparent is Open the Future.
My parent is Green LA Girl.

1. The best sexy concert in rock is…
The Cat Empire's Two Shoes Tour

2. The best cult blog in weird fiction is…
ChuckPahlaniuk.net

3. The best tap-shoe percussion CD in workout music is Tilly and The Wall's Bottoms of Barrels

I shall attempt to disseminate my seed to:

100th Monkey
Tinky McFrog
Greta Christina
Bring Your Own
Bean Sprouts

We'll see if any of them pass it on. I'm not making much of an effort to let them know about this because as a non-breeder, I don't care much about spreading my own genes.

And I haven't followed the rules exactly. But isn't that just what happens with random mutations?

——
There are a set of questions below that are all of the form, “The best [subgenre] [medium] in [genre] is …”.

Copy the questions, and before answering them, you may modify them in a limited way, carrying out no more than two of these operations:

*You can leave them exactly as is.

*You can delete any one question.

*You can mutate either the genre, medium, or subgenre of any one question. For instance, you could change “The best time travel novel in SF/Fantasy is…” to “The best time travel novel in Westerns is…”, or “The best time travel movie in SF/Fantasy is…:, or “The best romance novel in SF/Fantasy is…”.

*You can add a completely new question of your choice to the end of the list, as long as it is still in the form “The best [subgenre] [medium] in [genre] is…”.

You must have at least one question in your set, or you’ve gone extinct, and you must be able to answer it yourself, or you’re not viable.

Then answer your possibly mutant set of questions. Please do include a link back to the “parent” blog you got them from, e.g. Metamagician and the Hellfire Club to simplify tracing the ancestry, and include these instructions.

Finally, pass it along to any number of your fellow bloggers. Remember, though, your success as a Darwinian replicator is going to be measured by the propagation of your variants, which is going to be a function of both the interest your well-honed questions generate and the number of successful attempts at reproducing them.

Weekend Discussion: 8 Random Facts

Britt Bravo of Have Fun * Do Good tagged me to participate in the 8 Random Facts About Me Meme.

At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to participate because it felt like a chain letter. But since I usually throw out a discussion question on weekends, I thought it might be fun for readers to comment with any number of random facts about themselves. If you do choose to leave a comment, please tell us at least your first name.

Okay, the rest of this post will follow the instructions for the meme. At the end is a list of blogs that I am tagging. Please know that there is absolutely no pressure to participate. If you are too busy or don't like this kind of stuff, just ignore it.

First the rules:

1) Post these rules before you give your facts

2) List 8 random facts about yourself

3) At the end of your post, choose (tag) 8 people and list their names, linking to them

4) Leave a comment on their blog, letting them know they've been tagged.

Then the facts:

1. When I was in first grade, I wrote my first play called "Ploshin, Ploshin." That was how I spelled "pollution." It was about three kids, Beth, Betty, and Billy, who noticed all this litter on their street and sang an original song while picking up the trash together. We tried to perform it in my class, but I hadn't thought up a melody for the song, so we all ended up singing something different. This was the beginning of my environmental consciousness and also love for karaoke.

2. My favorite dessert as a little kid was a tiny bit of ice cream covered in mounds of Hershey's fudge sauce. My grandmother was the only one who let me have as much fudge sauce as I wanted. She served it in little green china bowls. When she died, the bowls were passed on to me, and I still use them for eating ice cream.

3. I have two sisters and two brothers. The youngest, David, has Down Syndrome. He lives with my parents and calls me regularly to discuss plans for his next birthday party, whether it's a week away or a year away.

4. I met my husband Michael online, but not through a dating site.

5. I get obsessed with certain albums and play them over and over until I can't stand listening to them anymore. One album that I doubt I'll ever get tired of is Demon Days by the Gorillaz. I'm serious. Nothing else comes close. Not even Radiohead.

6. My first job was at McDonald's when I was seventeen. McDonald's was a big treat for us when I was growing up. And I confess that I still get some overwhelming cravings for double cheeseburgers once in a while, even though I know all the reasons that the mainstream beef industry sucks.

7. I'm a sucker for karaoke. Luckily, Michael is too. In fact, we had our wedding reception in a karaoke bar. We sang a duet to a version of "Suddenly Seymour," but we changed the lyrics.

8. Try, try as I might, I can't completely get over my obsession with Madonna.

I'm tagging:

Least Footprint
Just Ducky
Plasticless
First Grade Rocks!
Conserve Plastic Bags
Urban Botany
Make-A-bag Along
